James Two Brothers distillery is a micro distillery for small boutique-style production of beverage grade spirit alcohol with simple principles; hard work and honesty.
This family owned and operated business was founded on June 18, 2012 by two brothers, Tim and Paul James. Their ancestors are of English and German heritage where great brewing is a time honored tradition, which they brought to this country in the early 1700s as Palatine immigrants.
Our research indicates numerous generations of our family were distillers who settled in the south central regions of Kentucky up to the Civil War era. Although ship manifests were poorly kept, the names indicate the initial charters were financed by our direct ancestors, and suggest they brought with them the skill sets of distillation.
Timothy James passed on May, 1 2018 from complication of COPD. At 62 it was unexpected, and we celebrate his life. And for the helping to start the James Two Brothers brand. Paul James and his son Taylor currently oversee the day to day operations of the distillery including tours and tastings.
You might say Ocala chose us. And it was for numerous reasons, not the least of which is the abundance of pure natural spring water in the area. Arguably cleaner than mountain fed streams, the subterranean water here is naturally filtered and pure.
Wildwood Springs is centrally located in Wildwood, Florida, established in 2008, their facility is fully licensed and permitted to provide water of the highest quality. It is tested at the national level for compliance and we are proud their water is at the foundation to our locally produced spirits.
There is also an unpretentious presence of small scale natural grain and cane farming, which assures we know what we are buying, and who we buy it from. We hope this will encourage and support local growers who, like us, care about how they work, and why.
When Tim and Paul began creating their signature Rum, they struggled with having to “label” it at all. As with the name it seemed obvious enough; Two Brothers were Distilling but it seemed appropriate somehow to have a touch stone symbol of the unique Spirits they wanted to create. There is no shortage of harsh, and strong tasting liquors. But a smooth and softer variety purposely crafted was unique. So it was a Moth, and specifically the Death Head Moth, called Acherontia Atropos that they finally choose.
A large Moth, having markings on the back of the thorax that resemble a human skull, it seemed somehow appropriate and apropos to Tim’s study of Greek Mythology and early Coptic Monks. The species was named after Atropos, Lachesis and Styx from Greek mythology, which relates to the fate of living things. The first refers to the member of the three Moirai who cuts the threads of life of all beings; the second to the Moira who allots the correct amount of life to a being; and the last refers to the river of the dead. Atropos was one of the three Moirai in Greek mythology, goddesses who decided the fate of every human that lived on the earth. Atropos, along with her sisters Clotho and Lachesis, were considered to be the daughters of Zeus and Themis, and the goddess of divine law. The Moirai, or Fates, controlled the destiny of every living mortal and it was thought that even Zeus was subject to their will, unable to change it.
It is also no strange coincidence that the Moth lets out a loud shriek, which was initially believed to bring death to anyone hearing it, and latter thought of as a defensive reaction. Our modern Entomologists found the shriek was used to disarm worker bees inside a hive, so that the honey could be harvested, and the culprit to escape without harm.
